Statehood Bill Sets New Record for Co-Sponsors

Today Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton announced that the Washington, DC Admission Act is now co-sponsored by 134 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the most ever to sign on to Statehood Legislation.

“DC Vote has worked tirelessly on education efforts across the country and here in the District. Our education efforts in Representatives’ home districts has resulted in greater support for Statehood and voters are making their voices heard.” said Bo Shuff, Executive Director of DC Vote. “This is part of our long term strategy to build support for Statehood in every other state in the nation. We coupled that effort with DC residents, and in this case DC students, going to Capitol Hill to talk face to face with Members of Congress. We are excited to see that having these conversations is making an impact and supporting the efforts of Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton”

On July 10th, DC Vote was joined by 56 national, regional and local groups in delivering a letter to Congress.  This coalition of groups is the largest to sign on to this letter which calls on Congress to respect the local autonomy of Washington DC and end the attacks on self-determination in governance.

“Organizations representing millions of Americans have made it clear that the District should not be Congress’ playground,” Shuff continued. “Now, combined with more support in Congress for Statehood, we know the tide is beginning to turn.”
