Once again, education barely came up in the GOP debate Saturday night, save when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie bragged about his battles with teachers unions and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz blasted President Obama for “abusing executive power using Race to the Top funds in the Department of Education to force [the Common Core standards] in the states.” (Race to the Top ended last year, but who’s counting?)

Eleventh District U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows has filed a bill to allow parents to get most of Washington, D.C., schools' revenue in the form of vouchers to be spent at any school they want. But the district's representative in the House, Democratic U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, says it "violates (Meadows') own tea party principles" favoring local control over local issues and promises to fight its passage.

Legislation introduced in both chambers of Congress would force Washington, D.C. to use local taxpayer money to fund a school voucher program that many city officials have long said they oppose.

Congressman David Schweikert (R - Ariz.) plans to introduce legislation Thursday that if passed will require Washington D.C., an area that functions as a ward of the federal government, to recognize and honor concealed carry permits from all 50 states.  The D.C. Personal Protection Reciprocity Act will do three main things:  1) require D.C. to recognize out of state concealed carry permits 2) require D.C. to approve concealed carry applications of recently relocated individuals who lawfully hold concealed carry permits in the states where they moved from

It's been a year since D.C. residents overwhelmingly voted to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana, but Congress is again blocking any further efforts to permit retail sales of the drug in the nation's capital. Tucked in a 2,000-page must-pass spending bill is a provision that would prohibit the city from spending any money to "enact any law, rule, or regulation to legalize or otherwise reduce penalties associated with the possession, use, or distribution of any schedule I substance," which includes marijuana.
